About Drift American Owner Scott Umbreit

Cars and trucks have been a passion of mine since I was a little kid, and they are a huge part of my life. I have experience working for several race teams, dealerships, shops, and a manufacturer, and now own two automotive businesses.

I've always wanted to be a race car driver since I was a little kid. Although I may not be a professional driver, I am still chasing my dreams of competition by competing in drift competitions and exhibitions.

I've been fortunate enough to have great partnerships, crew members, and teammates, along with countless other people that have helped me succeed in achieving many podium finishes and championships over my career.

I enjoy meeting new people, and sharing my passion for vehicles with others! Feel free to contact me regarding any business inquiries regarding my businesses or motorsports program.

The History of Drifting

Drifting, the captivating motorsport that has captured the hearts of car enthusiasts worldwide is a unique blend of skill, speed, and showmanship. The art of sliding cars sideways through corners, once an underground phenomenon, has blossomed into a global spectacle. Let's take a journey through time and explore the history of drifting, from its humble beginnings to its rise as a mainstream motorsport.

Origins in the Land of the Rising Sun

The roots of drifting can be traced back to the mountains of Japan in the 1970s and 1980s. Japanese street racers, known as "hashiriya," would compete in illegal races on winding mountain roads, seeking thrill and adrenaline. As these racers honed their skills, they discovered that by intentionally oversteering and sliding their cars through corners, they could maintain speed while taking a more aggressive racing line. This marked the birth of the art of drifting.

The Birth of D1 Grand Prix

Drifting's popularity continued to grow, and it gained mainstream recognition in the 1990s. The pivotal moment came in 2000 when the first professional drifting championship, known as the D1 Grand Prix, was established in Japan. The D1GP brought together the best drifters, turning the sport into a legitimate and competitive motorsport. With organized events, dedicated tracks, and a growing fan base, drifting was on its way to international fame.

Spreading the Tire Smoke: Drifting Goes Global

The popularity of drifting surged beyond Japan's borders, thanks in part to various video games, movies, and online videos showcasing the sport's excitement. As car enthusiasts worldwide caught wind of this mesmerizing art form, drifting events and competitions started cropping up in different countries. The United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe were among the first to embrace the sport wholeheartedly.

Formula Drift: Ushering in a New Era

In 2004, Formula Drift (FD) was established in the United States, quickly becoming the premier drifting championship in North America. FD's professional and standardized approach to the sport further propelled drifting's global expansion. Its success inspired the formation of various national and regional drifting championships in different parts of the world.

A New Wave of Drifting Icons

As drifting grew, so did its cast of remarkable drivers who pushed the boundaries of what was possible behind the wheel. Legends like Keiichi Tsuchiya, known as the "Drift King," and Nobuteru Taniguchi paved the way for a new generation of drifters. Drivers like Vaughn Gittin Jr., Ken Gushi, and Daigo Saito emerged as global icons, showcasing extraordinary skills and entertaining fans at drifting events worldwide.

Drifting in Pop Culture

Drifting's integration into popular culture played a significant role in its widespread acceptance. Hollywood movies like "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" and video games such as the "Need for Speed" series brought drifting to mainstream audiences, further fueling its popularity.

Conclusion

From its origins as an underground street racing activity in Japan to becoming a globally recognized motorsport spectacle, the history of drifting is a testament to the passion, skill, and dedication of its drivers and fans. This thrilling sport continues to evolve, captivating new generations of enthusiasts, and carving its place in the annals of motorsport history. As driftings tire smoke continues to rise, it is certain that this captivating art form will continue to conquer hearts and racetracks around the world.
